Outreach

Welcome! At UVA, diversity allows people to come together in mutual respect to share ideas and learn from one another. When that happens, we believe that everyone on campus benefits, and we believe that students leave the University with a richer and expanded view of the world around them.

Diversity means more than just welcoming students with many different backgrounds. It means making sure that all students feel at home at UVA and that they all have the same opportunities once they are enrolled at the University.

As you begin to evaluate colleges, please feel free to contact the Outreach Office. We will be more than happy to answer your questions about UVA and college admission. We know you have many important decisions to make about your future, and want to be as helpful as possible. The best of luck to you this year and we look forward to being in contact with you

A video interview from a few years back ...

About four years ago, I received a request from a printmaker in Colombia to do a video interview (not in person, but over Skype and via clips sent back and forth). It has taken him a while to get it ready :-) but this morning he sent me a link to the finished product on YouTube. I think it turned out OK!

First Paid Advertising in Mokuhankan History

This month marks a historical first for Mokuhankan: we are using our first paid advertising. We think it's a pretty cool form of advertising, too. Asakusa Station on the Ginza Line near us has installed an enormous touch screen monitor with a map and detailed information and photos from 30 different shops in the area, and we are one of the 30! Keep reading to see how it looks, and find out how it came about...

In the past, Mokuhankan has had lots of visiting salespeople, trying to get us to sign up for a small spot on printed maps, posters, pamphlets, et cetera, but with Asakusa being such a tourism hot spot, competition is fierce and prices have been absurdly high, so we've never been particularly interested in marketing that way.

However, a young man came earlier this year with an interesting proposition. Asakusa Station on the Ginza Line was planning to install a large touch-enabled screen with tourist information in multiple languages, and he wanted us to be a part of it. Not only that, but his price was substantially lower than anything the previous salespeople had ever presented to us, and this was for something more exciting than a pamphlet.

Up until now, the majority of our customers have been people who discovered us online, so they don't really care much about running into information about us in the train station. But with our upcoming move to the first floor of our building, and with the surging numbers of international tourists coming to Japan, we decided to take a chance.

The cool new screen introduces 30 different companies in a grid, presenting the information in five languages (Japanese, English, Korean, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese) alongside a digital map and paper maps. The companies' logos all get shuffled periodically so no one company is permanently placed higher than any others.

The map is interactive, and you can find out more about the other companies by touching their logos on the right or their names on the map. It's fun and easy to use, and we hope more visitors to the Asakusa neighborhood will enjoy it and find us a little more easily!

September 10, 2014 Professor Dietz's Aunt Madeline is 100 years old. We had a website, http://madeline100.com/, which was celebrating that and her travels, which have taken her to over 100 countries... but that site is now something completely different with which we have no connection.

September 10, 2014

March 13-16, 2014 Lexington, Kentucky hosted IEEE SoutheastCon 2014 , which was not only an IEEE regional conference with all the activities you'd expect, but also continued the tradition of having a technical program with peer-reviewed papers. Copyright handling issues delayed the proceedings, but IEEE has everything and online indexes should be complete by mid October.

March 13-16, 2014

February 4-5, 2014 Prof. Dietz presented two papers and a research exhibit at the SPIE Electronic Imaging conference: Out-of-focus point spread functions ( BalaMasa Womens Platform SlipResistant Ruffles Urethane Boots ABL10109 Gray MpTJWGYwjD
, full paper) and Frameless, time domain continuous image capture ( AmoonyFashion Womens Closed Toe HighHeels Soft Material Solid Laceup Sandals Black lzwEgC1Z
, full paper ).

February 4-5, 2014

January 16, 2014 Prof. Dietz presented Carolbar Womens Open Toe Buckle TStrap Comfort Flats Sandals Nudepink yCkKvI
at the Creative Camera Club, Inc. of Lexington, KY.

January 16, 2014

November 17-22, 2013 We will once again have a onlymaker Women Round Toe Ballet Flats With Bowknot Slip On Classic Dress Shoes Black to Nude eWEId
at , in Denver, CO. See us there! This is our 20th year as a research exhibit.

November 17-22, 2013

October 22, 2013 We've started putting together materials on using Little Kids 2 Tone Summer Clog Light Blue / Green gsNNm0ma
. Initially, there's just a CHDK Lua reference card, but we'll be putting a lot more there soon....

October 22, 2013

September 28, 2013 Prof. Dietz and Paul Eberhart gave a presentation on 2D/3D making for students in the YMCA Black Achievers program ( PDF slides ). Dietz also created a Prosthetic/Robotic Hand Printable As An Assembled Unit Without Supports for this presentation.

September 28, 2013

May 22, 2013 Prof. Dietz and his daughter have donated a birdhouse to adidas Mens Powerlift31 Cross Trainer Tech Beige/Trace Olive/Black 9Tjsq
's Birdhouse Display and Benefit Auction. Why is this here? Because the birdhouse was 3D printed in our lab. An Instructable explains how it was built.

May 22, 2013

May 5, 2013 Well, it was bound to happen sometime.... After all, we've always built stuff, and modern tools for 2D and 3D construction are very much a product of the computer engineering revolution. We now have the start of a subsite on making things .
